What is the United Way? United Way is a nonprofit organization that works with a range of charitable organizations to pool efforts in fundraising and support. Its focus is to identify and resolve pressing community issues as well as make measurable change in communities through partnerships with health and human service agencies, schools, government agencies, businesses and more. United Way seeks to address the root causes of key issues and is accountable for stewardship of resources and short- and long-term results.
How is United Way governed? Each United Way is governed by a local volunteer board of directors. The board participates in all decision making, ensuring the organization is representative of the community, its needs and the goals of its citizens.
Where is United Way located? United Way is a worldwide organization of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways in more than 40 countries and territories. Your local affiliate is the United Way of Graham & Greenlee Counties.
What does United Way do? United Way works to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. Together with the community, United Way works to identify critical needs, reduce duplication of services, and close gaps in services as they invest donors’ gifts in the areas of education, income and health. United Way mobilizes millions to action – to give, advocate and volunteer – to improve their communities.
Do you have paid staff? Yes, the United Way of Graham & Greenlee Counties now has two staff members who work with our volunteer board of directors.
Does United Way fund animal organizations? Yes, but only if the organization provides a health and human service program. For example, an organization that provides individuals support through animal therapy would be eligible. An organization that provides shelter for animals would NOT be eligible.
Does United Way support religious agencies? Yes, but only if the organization provides a health and human service program. Funds must be directed to the specific program that serves the community (i.e. a food bank run by a church).
Does United Way support Planned Parenthood? United Way organizations in all countries and cities are run locally. This means that some communities choose to support Planned Parenthood, and some do not. These decisions are made by local volunteers and community leaders based on the goals and strategies of their United Way and input from the community.
How do I know my funds will support my own local community? Any personal contributions made to United Way’s general fund will be distributed to effective health and human service programs in your local community.
Is my United Way contribution tax deductible? Depending on your circumstances, your contribution could be tax deductible if you itemize your deductions. Please contact your tax advisor for a definitive answer.
